Welcome

The Pickford Area Historical Society came to life in 1976 when several members of the community realized the importance of preserving the history of the area.

The Society celebrated the Centennial of Pickford in 1977 as well as acquired several hundred items for inclusion into a museum.

For several years the members saved and planned. The risk of losing much of the area history became evident with the passing of many older residents, so the Society re-organized in 2000. New by-laws were written, federal tax-exempt status was obtained and plans to develop a museum to house the growing collections began in earnest.

The purchase of the old Harrison Hardware building on Main Street set the stage for many hours of dedicated labor, a capital funds campaign, applications for grants and the renovation of this beautiful old building into a spacious museum. The building was placed onto the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
In 2012, a 2% gaming revenue grant and a Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs grant helped pay for a heating/air conditioning system and lights/ receptacles in the exhibit area of the museum. In 2013, a grant from the EUP Regional Planning & Development Commission provided a five component hands on children’s museum. A must-see for children ages 5 to 12.

2020-21 Basement restoration—floor leveled with concrete, new windows, insulation and wall paneling, making the basement area friendly user with exhibits.

Each summer up to 1,200 visitors sign the guest book and enjoy the collections at no charge. A host of wonderful volunteers staff the museum from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday from June 7 to September 30th.  October the museum is also open Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
